Out with plastic, in with paperboard – a circular solution for doughnut packaging

Metsä Board's Kemi mill development programme completed
The development programme for Metsä Board's white kraftliner mill in Kemi has been completed in parallel with Metsä Fibre's new bioproduct mill. Metsä Board and Metsä Fibre are part of Metsä Group. In addition to increasing the mill’s capacity by 40,000 tonnes per year, the development programme will reduce the mill's energy consumption by 5% and water consumption by around 40% per tonne produced.

Metsä Board Husum prepares to start up expanded BM1 this autumn
Metsä Board, the leading European producer of premium fresh fibre paperboards and part of Metsä Group, is reaching the final phases of its folding boxboard capacity expansion at the Husum mill in Sweden. Once the expansion is completed, the mill’s BM1 folding board machine will be delivering 600,000 tonnes of premium lightweight folding boxboard every year to consumer packaging and food service end uses all around the world.

Smurfit Kappa agrees to acquire state of the art 600,000 tonne recycled containerboard mill
Smurfit Kappa Group plc (“SKG” or the “Group”) agrees to acquire Verzuolo, a containerboard business in Northern Italy, for a cash consideration of €360 million. The Verzuolo mill owned by the Burgo Group, is situated close to the port of Savona in the northwest of Italy. The PM9 machine was newly constructed in 2002 and converted into a 600,000 tonne capacity recycled containerboard machine in 2019.
