Stora Enso invests to strengthen focus on specialised pulp grades

Stora Enso strengthens its focus on specialised pulp grades by investing EUR 38 million in unbleached kraft pulp (UKP) production at its Enocell site in Finland and EUR 42 million in fluff pulp production improvement at its Skutskär site in Sweden. These investments will support the growing consumer demand for non-bleached renewable packaging materials and hygiene products respectively.

The groundwood line in Rottneros Mill to be closed down, CTMP production planned to increase significantly

Following an extensive and long-term strategic analysis, Rottneros' Board of Directors has decided to discontinue the production of groundwood pulp in Rottneros Mill as there are no prospects for long-term sustainable profitability. The decision means that about 40 people will be made redundant. The cost of the closure is expected to amount to approximately 60 MSEK. Production is expected to cease at the end of 2022, following the conclusion of trade union negotiations which are now beginning.

Södra delivers robust result in uncertain times

Södra posted a robust result for the second quarter of 2022. The result reflects the sustained strong market for Södra’s core products in pulp and sawn timber, but the market outlook is highly uncertain.
In the second quarter of 2022, net sales for the Södra Group amounted to SEK 8,953 million (7,287), up 23 percent compared with the year-earlier period. Operating profit totalled SEK 2,325 million (1,326), the highest quarterly result for Södra to date.

Södra to raise price of NBSK to USD 960/tonne

Södra Cell is increasing the price of its northern bleached softwood kraft (NBSK) pulp in Europe to $960, effective 1 January 2021.
 
“Despite challenges in 2020 the demand for our NBSK stayed healthy throughout the year. Now we distinguish clear signs of the global NBSK market recovering, and in addition we also sense the impact of multiple maintenance stops reducing supply, further improving the market balance.
 

Holmen acquires Martinsons

Today Holmen signed an agreement to acquire Martinsons, one of Sweden’s leading players in sawn and processed wood products. The purchase price is SEK 1.0 billion for 100 per cent of the shares. The acquisition will almost double Holmen’s sales of wood products to over SEK 3 billion, while also advancing positions in wood construction and providing Holmen with the capacity to process the majority of the raw material from its own forests in its own industry.

Södra posts a stable result but the outlook remains unclear

Södra’s operating profit during Q2 was stable given current market conditions. Deliveries were higher year-on-year, but prices for Södra’s core products were considerably weaker than in 2019. For the first half of 2020, operating profit totalled SEK 449 million (2,009), return on capital employed was 4 per cent (19) and the equity ratio was 57 per cent. Sales for the second quarter amounted to SEK 5,416 million (6,199) and operating profit totalled SEK 221 million (861)
 

Kemira rated as top 1% for sustainability by global rating platform EcoVadis

Kemira has been awarded with the Gold level rating by the global sustainability rating platform EcoVadis. With a total score of 75 out of 100, this puts Kemira among the top 1% of companies in the world.

Companies scoring between 62 and 100 receive the Gold rating and make up the top 5%. This is the fifth consecutive year that Kemira has achieved a Gold rating.

Stora Enso is investing EUR 5 million to build a new production line and related infrastructure to manufacture formed fiber products at Hylte Mill in Sweden. The formed fiber technology enables manufacturing of products that are designed for circularity, meaning that they are renewable, recyclable and biodegradable and do not contain any plastic.
