European Paper Recycling Council (EPRC) data reveals that the recycling rate for all paper products, including graphic paper, packaging and tissue, reached 75.1% in 2024. This figure aligns with multi-annual growth trends, demonstrating that the sector remains on track to meet its voluntary recycling target of a 76% recycling rate by 2030.
A charming new children's book is turning pages - and heads - in the publishing world. Little Coffee Cup and the Big Surprise, the debut title from author and sustainability advocate Hayley Slack, is the world's first published children's book to be printed on paper made from recycled coffee cups.
With a joint investment of approximately EUR 29 million by Stora Enso and Tetra Pak, a new recycling line for post-consumer beverage cartons is starting operations in Poland. Stora Enso has invested approximately EUR 17 million into a new repulping line that will recover the carton fibers, and Tetra Pak along with Plastigram have invested a total of approximately EUR 12 million to build the new line.
Stora Enso and Tetra Pak are jointly examining a shared beverage carton recycling solution to meet the growing recycling need in Benelux, responding to the demand for circular paper-based packaging solutions. The joint feasibility study includes a plan for a comprehensive beverage carton recycling facility at Stora Enso’s Langerbrugge site in Belgium. Processing of the fibers would take place at the Langerbrugge site, while the polymer and aluminum barrier materials would be recycled by a dedicated partner.
The two companies will partner to provide circular solutions to the market. The investment in a complete recycling solution is set to significantly improve recycling throughout Central and Eastern Europe.
Stora Enso aims to start recycling used paper cups on a large scale at its Langerbrugge Mill in Belgium. Based on production trials, Stora Enso possesses the technical feasibility to recycle paper cups for use in other paper applications. Stora Enso is now looking into partnerships for the collection and sorting of used paper cups to ensure that this high-quality fibre material is captured and given a second life.
