Stora Enso and Picadeli join forces to reduce single-use plastic in salad packaging

Stora Enso and Picadeli, Europe’s leading take-away salad bar company, are introducing renewable formed fiber lids to replace single-use plastics in take-away packaging. The lids are made of PureFiber™ by Stora Enso, and they are plastic-free, recyclable, and biodegradable. The innovation will help Picadeli reduce approximately 120 tonnes of plastic waste annually.  

Mondi’s 100% recyclable corrugated packaging for Warmhaus boilers and radiators

Mondi, a global leader in packaging and paper, has created a fully recyclable packaging solution for Warmhaus, a Turkish producer of radiators and boilers for home heating. The new Monocorr Box is made of 100% recyclable corrugated board, including the inserts that cushion the packaged products. The previous Warmhaus packaging used expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam inserts, which have low recycling rates throughout Europe and generally end up in landfill or incineration facilities after disposal.
 

Metsä Board’s co-creation workshop results in an innovative insect hotel

Finnish Golf Coat Oy is launching a new golf ball packaging that, when empty, takes on a second life as an insect hotel. The innovative packaging is a result of a co-creation workshop organised by Metsä Board, part of Metsä Group. The workshops are part of Metsä Board’s 360 Services that cover the whole packaging value chain by utilising the state-of-the-art Excellence Centre in Äänekoski, Finland.

Luxury potatoes packaged responsibly

A plastic-reducing alternative to potato packaging has been introduced by Finnish Tuorekartano Oy when it recently launched its special potatoes in paperboard packaging. Tuorekartano Oy's premium quality La Ratte potatoes will now be packed in easily recyclable and biodegradable packaging made of a lightweight and durable paperboard produced by Metsä Board, part of Metsä Group. The paperboard is ideally suited to protect the potatoes from damage and sunlight. The small package size will also help to reduce food waste.

Easy to recycle plastic-free chocolate calendar

Ifolor, an international photo service company, has launched a completely plastic-free and experiential chocolate calendar that can be personalised with your own photos. After use, the calendar is easy to recycle in the paperboard collection. The calendars are made from Metsä Board's lightweight and durable folding boxboard, which accurately reproduces the printed photo. The strong but lightweight inner structure of the calendar is made of Metsä Board's white kraftliner.

Paper Is an Effective – and Cost-Effective – Cold Chain Packing Solution

During the pandemic, use of ecommerce spiked, including online purchasing of food products that require thermal protection during the shipping process. In most cases, products are delivered within 24 hours, and traditionally, many of these products have been shipped using expanded polystyrene (EPS) boxes and other non-sustainable traditional cold chain solutions. While these boxes are lightweight and provide good thermal protection, they do have disadvantages.

Arctic Paper and Rottneros are collaborating on sustainable fiber trays in Poland

Arctic Paper and Rottneros have signed a Letter of Intent regarding a 50/50 joint venture in Kostrzyn, Poland with the aim of building a molded fiber tray factory. The start-up of the new factory, which is estimated to generate an annual revenue of 9-11 MEUR, is planned for the end of 2023. The investment is expected to amount to 12-15 MEUR, corresponding to approximately 55-70 MPLN.
