The ‘Better with Less – Design Challenge’ 2019–2020 packaging design competition opens for entries

The Better with Less – Design Challenge, organised by Metsä Board, the European producer of premium fresh fibre paperboards and part of Metsä Group, is now in its second year. Its aim is to inspire designers to create more environmentally-friendly packaging solutions for e-commerce, cosmetics and food.

New renewable, recyclable and compostable package for Carte d’Or

Unilever has introduced its Carte d’Or ice cream in a new paperboard packaging in Italy. The bowl is made from PEFC certified renewable fibre with a biodegradable barrier coating, and after use it can be either recycled or composted in industrial composting.

The Carte d’Or packages are produced by Seda Italy in Naples, and the material is Cupforma Natura™ by Stora Enso. The board has a biodegradable barrier on its both sides to preserve ice cream safely in freezing and moist conditions.

Jardines de Los Andes is a leading Colombian flower grower that developed a brand called ‘Enjoy Flowers’ to target customers through the eCommerce channel. 

Tetra Pak becomes first carton packaging company to launch paper straws in Europe

Tetra Pak has today announced that customers have started field testing​ its paper straws for beverage products in Europe. The move means Tetra Pak is the first carton packaging company to provide such straws for beverage cartons in the region.

The company also announced its intention to publish and share its innovations on paper straw developments to support industrial collaboration on the alternatives to single use plastic straws for beverage cartons.

Metsä Board’s takeaway packaging in a Finnish innovation competition

In the spring Metsä Board – part of Metsä Group – announced that its modular takeaway packaging, targeted at restaurants' takeaway services, was one of the seven winning concept ideas in the Helsinki Wholesale market area's innovation competition. The winners were able to enter a pilot phase which has now come to the end. The takeaway packaging, developed by the project group led by Metsä Board, is easily recyclable and made of Metsä Board's fresh fibre paperboard.

Smurfit Kappa recognised as 'most respected brand' and sustainability leader at Deliver 2019

Smurfit Kappa has won the ‘Cool Vendor’ and ‘Sustainability’ awards at the 2019 Deliver event in Lisbon.

Deliver is the biggest eCommerce logistics event in Europe. During the event, companies providing a diverse range of eCommerce services and products met with C-suite representatives from 750 of the world’s leading etailers. 

Smurfit Kappa's sustainable packaging innovation recognised in WorldStar Awards

Smurfit Kappa has won three awards for innovative and sustainable packaging solutions at the 2019 WorldStar Awards.

The first product was for a life-saving dialysis kit. ‘Not a Drop Wasted’ is a secure but easily opened pack with rounded corners to protect the 5-litre bags of dialysis solution inside.

The second winning product was the stand-out ‘Cardboard Castle’ toy box for use in the eCommerce sector. The toy is shipped in an attractive box which can then be quickly turned into a castle creating an enhanced consumer experience.
