Pulp and Paper Industry Showcases Commitment to Phase out Fossil Energies, at European Parliament Event

The European pulp and paper manufacturing sector, the fourth largest industrial user of energy in Europe, has achieved a remarkable 46% reduction in CO2 emissions since 2005, successfully decoupling growth from potential climate impacts. However, the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) mandates further reductions, targeting a 62% decrease by 2030, with even steeper cuts required in the future.

Metsä Group’s tissue paper business receives fifth Platinum Rating in EcoVadis evaluation for 2024

Metsä Group’s tissue paper business including greaseproof paper business, has once again achieved the highest Platinum rating in the EcoVadis sustainability and social responsibility evaluation for 2024. This marks the fifth consecutive year the company has been recognized with this esteemed rating, placing it among the top one percent of all companies assessed by EcoVadis. Metsä Tissue maintained high scores across all four themes evaluated, excelling particularly in the environment category with a score of 90/100.

Metsä Tissue Kreuzau mill reduces CO2 emissions by two third of the annual mill emissions

According to the goal of Metsä Tissue, part of Metsä Group, to develop its Future Mill-concept, the company will aim to have fossil free mill fleet by 2030 and accordingly it has stopped using coal as an energy source in its Kreuzau’s mill. Since September 2023 the Kreuzau mill has been replacing the use of fossil-based lignite by wood pellets in the mills heat production.

Valmet has signed a EUR 175 million loan with European Investment Bank linked to company’s Research and Development activities

Valmet has signed a EUR 175 million loan agreement with the European Investment Bank (EIB). The loan will support Valmet’s Research and Development (R&D) activities to help finance technologies that replace fossil fuels with renewables. The loan agreement is linked to company’s R&D activities in 2023-2026.

Sappi Gratkorn’s next step to increase the share of renewable energy

As part of Sappi Europe's full scale decarbonisation roadmap, Gratkorn mill is expanding the share of biomass to be used as an energy source, further driving the move away from fossil fuels as part of the mill’s contribution to the European roadmap. The project follows the recent modernisation of the power plant boiler which enabled the shift from coal to a combined approach of biomass and natural gas.
 

Metsä Tissue joins to the "Modellfabrik Papier in Düren" research network

As of July 01, 2023, Metsä Tissue, part of Metsä Group, will become a shareholder of “Modellfabrik Papier in Düren”, Germany. Founded in 2020, Modellfabrik is a society for research and development for sustainable paper technologies. It conducts basic research in the field of emission-free paper production. The primary goal is to achieve 80% energy savings in paper production and climate neutrality by 2045 and thus CO2-neutral paper production.
